＃歷史上的今天：1968羅伯甘迺迪悼金恩博士演講

48年前的今天，時任紐約參議員的羅伯甘迺迪（Robert Francis Kennedy，以下簡稱RFK）發表了一場美國史上最經典，也最治癒人心（healing）的一場演講之一。

RFK在這天傍晚向印第安納波里斯（Indianapolis）市中心的群眾公布了民權運動家馬丁路德金恩博士（Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.）遭到刺殺的消息。那是一個「即時新聞」還不存在的年代，聚集的群眾當中多數人並不知道這則消息，有些人已經聽說了，有些人則握著球棒、鏈條，準備發動暴亂。

該市市長Richard Lugar警告RFK最好不要在這個時間點宣布此事，當地警局更拒絕護送他至貧民區中。不過在與另一位民權運動家，現為喬治亞州（Georgia）參議員的John Lewis商量之後，RFK仍在毫無防備的情況下，站上平板卡車發表演說。

「我有個壞消息，給各位市民朋友，和全世界愛好和平的人們，馬丁路德金恩博士今晚遭到槍殺了....金恩一生為愛與正義奉獻，而他也正因這個原因去世。」

"I have bad news for you, for all fellow citizens, and people who love peace all over the world, and that is that Dr. Martin Luther King was shot and killed tonight. . . . Martin Luther King dedicated his life to love and to justice for his fellow human beings, and he died in the cause of that effort."

此時台下聽眾所發出的嘆息聲、驚嚇聲已不難聽見，不過RFK接下來的這段話才是這場演講之所以會被紀念的關鍵所在...

「對於你們當中的黑人而言，鑑於部分白人必須對此事負責的事實，你們可能充滿著悲痛、憎恨，以及復仇的慾望。我們身為一個國家可以朝著這個方向前進，造成更大的對立...或是我們可像金恩一樣，去理解和領會，並用愛與同情取代暴力和流遍我們的土地的鮮血。」

"For those of you who are black, considering the evidence that there evidently were white people who were responsible, you can be filled with bitterness, with hatred and a desire for revenge. We can move in that direction as a country, in great polarization . . . Or we can make an effort, as Martin Luther King did, to understand and to comprehend, and to replace that violence, that stain of bloodshed that has spread across our land, with an effort to understand with compassion and love."

接著，RFK也首次公開提及其兄，前總統甘迺迪（John Fitzgerald Kennedy）於1963年遇刺一事。

「對於那些現在內心充滿怨恨和不信任的人們，我只能說，我自己也能體會這同一種感覺。我有一個被殺害的家族成員，不過他是被白人殺害的。但我們必須盡力，在美利堅合眾國，我們必須盡力去理解，並試圖超越，超越這些相對艱難的時刻。」

"For those of you who are black and are tempted to fill with -- be filled with hatred and mistrust of the injustice of such an act, against all white people, I would only say that I can also feel in my own heart the same kind of feeling. I had a member of my family killed, but he was killed by a white man.But we have to make an effort in the United States. We have to make an effort to understand, to get beyond, or go beyond these rather difficult times."

最後，RFK也再度重申了美國真正需要的不是分立、不是憎恨、不是暴力或目無法紀，而是愛、智慧、和憐憫之心，以及對於那些受苦的人們的正義感，不論他們是黑人還是白人。

在金恩遇刺之後，全美共34個城市發生暴動。但印第安納波利斯這個黑人人口最多的城市之一，在這場演講之後，卻沒有任何暴亂傳出。RFK用一種在美國政壇前不見古人後不見來者的方式團結了美國的黑人和勞動階級的白人，遺憾的是，他自己卻也在兩個月後爭取民主黨內總統候選人提名的過程中於加州遇刺身亡，得年僅42歲。

而「經典」之所以為「經典」，就是不論套用於何時、何人、何地都說得通，都有道理。就讓我們藉由這個機會，提醒自己故人為這個社會所做的貢獻，並持續朝著他們當初的理念努力吧！
